THE GREAT STATESMEN'S TOUR: SULGRAVE MANOR, BANBURY AND BLENHEIM PALACE

Blenheim Palace Highlights include:

  • Sulgrave Manor the ancestral home of George Washington (exclusive to Evan Evans)
  • Banbury Market Town
  • Cotswolds
  • Blenheim Palace : the birthplace of Winston Churchill.

A bit of America in deepest green and leafy Northamptonshire, this is an exclusive opportunity to visit the picturesque Sulgrave Manor, home to generations of George Washington's ancestors. Built in the 1500s with money made in the flourishing English wool trade, Sulgrave Manor is where it all began! Look for the family coat of arms carved in walls and doorways around the manor and decide for yourself what it reminds you of - it won't be the only surprise you'll get... You'll see items of furniture, equipment and clothing that would have actually been used by George Washington's direct ancestors as well as intimate artefacts relating to George Washington himself. The oak-panelled parlour, the Elizabethan four-poster bed, the kitchen filled with authentic cooking implements - this is where they lived, ate and slept! Ensure you make time to wander round the delightful gardens, filled with the scent of the world-famous Sulgrave lavender and enjoy the elegant and carefully cultivated plants and bushes.

We then make our way to the charming market town of Banbury for lunch where you can find out what you would see if you rode a cockhorse to Banbury Cross! The pleasant town of Banbury is on the edge of the Cotswolds, an area steeped in history, rich in heritage and awash with natural beauty.

We'll enjoy a relaxing drive through the gently rolling hills ('wolds') of the Cotswolds to Blenheim Palace, birthplace of today's other great statesman Winston Churchill. Built in the early 1700s Blenheim Palace is a masterpiece of English Baroque architecture designed by Sir John Vanbrugh. The stunning State Rooms are brimming with priceless pictures, exquisite porcelain collections and magnificent tapestries. You'll also have the opportunity to see the room where Churchill was born. We'll visit the grounds of Blenheim Palace with its lakes spanned by stone bridges, woodlands, follies and of course the Marlborough Maze, the world's largest hedge maze.
